Goodwood’s association with Ireland dates back to the eighteenth century with the famous Lennox sisters, daughters of the 2nd Duke of Richmond. Lady Emily married the 1st Duke of Leinster and lived at Carton in Co. Kildare, while her sister, Lady Louisa, married Tom Conolly, and lived at nearby Castletown. They were passionate about the arts and intimately involved in the decoration of their famous homes. The 4th Duke of Richmond, was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in the early nineteenth century, where his secretary was the young Arthur Wellesley, later to be created the Duke of Wellington.
