The Revival saw 16 exciting races, pitting the best drivers and riders with period racing machines. Racing highlights included the St Mary’s Trophy for 1960s saloons, the Sussex Trophy for 1950s sports cars, plus some lively motor cycle racing in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy. The Royal Automobile Club TT celebration with a £30 million grid of beautiful sports cars provided some masterful racing from a host of professional stars, plus a few bumps and scrapes along the way.
As well as a host of magnificent flying machines in the air, the first ever Freddie March Spirit of Aviation saw over 20 of the finest pre-1966 civilian, commercial and military aircraft on static display for all to see. The art-deco ’ Woad Corner ’ showroom had a mouth-watering display of celebrated Ferrari road and race cars for visitors to lust over, and the inaugural Goodwood Revival Ladies Day also attracted appreciative glances of a different kind.
The distinguished motor racing career of Roy Salvadori was also celebrated, with a mouth-watering parade of cars and drivers that formed a significant part of his competition career. More pedestrian, and rather more unusual, was the parade of classic caravans from the 1920s and mid-1960s, each one towed by an appropriate period car, giving a nostalgic reminder of these unusual vehicles that became popular during the fuel-starved Suez Crisis 50 years ago.
