Good DetailsThe 2012 Festival of Speed was the biggest ever, with a record 185,000 motor sport enthusiasts converging on Goodwood to celebrate the 2012 theme of “Young Guns – Born to Win”.
Epitomising this theme were two of motor
racing’s finest ‘young guns’ making their Goodwood debut – reigning Formula 1 World
Champion Sebastian Vettel, plus previous multiple champion Alain Prost – both
in action on the 1.16-mile Festival hillclimb, along with over 100 other motor
racing heroes, from Stirling Moss and John Surtees, to Emerson Fittipaldi and
Kenny Roberts, plus most of the 2012-season Formula 1 teams, including Red Bull Racing, McLaren,
Ferrari, Lotus, Mercedes and Caterham, being driven by superstar drivers such
as Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg.
Lotus was this year’s celebrated Central Feature marque, with a 28-metre high sculpture outside Goodwood House, plus more than 40 significant racing examples of the mark taking to the Festival Hill.
Goodwood also paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with a unique
Diamond Jubilee display. For the first time ever, the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’
concours d’elegance had just one subject, with royal vehicles all owned or used
by The Queen, ranging from stately limousines to an aircraft, via a train
carriage!
Other popular attractions included the Forest Rally Stage, the enlarged GAS arena - where Goodwood Active Sports assembled a star-studded gathering of the world’s top riders of pedal bikes and motorcycles. A hectic 2012 Festival of Speed climaxed in the Timed Shootout on Sunday afternoon, bringing a suitably dramatic conclusion to a truly thrilling event.
